Argument-Function Mismatches in Mandarin Resultatives: A Lexical Mapping Account
ثبت نشده
چکیده
This paper seeks to account for the argument-function mismatches observed in Mandarin resultative compound verbs. The account is formulated within a revised Lexical Mapping Theory which incorporates a unified mapping principle. Under the simplest and also the strictest interpretation of this mapping principle (or the θ-criterion), a composite role, formed by two composing roles, receives syntactic assignment via one composing role only; the second composing role is thus suppressed. Argument-function mismatches are due to the competition between composing roles for syntactic assignment. This LMT account also facilitates a natural explanation of markedness among the competing syntactic structures.

Mandarin Resultative Compounds: a Family of Lexical Constructions
This paper presents a novel analysis of certain Mandarin resultative compounds whose interpretations have provided a challenge to traditional assumptions regarding argument-function mapping. We argue that the peculiarities associated with these compounds point to the need to recognise constructional effects in grammar. In contrast to previous analyses, which make essentially ad hoc modification...
متن کاملA Comparative Study on Mandarin and Cantonese Resultative Verb Compounds
This paper explores the conditions where Mandarin RVCs can be preserved in their Cantonese counterparts. Six types of Mandarin RVCs – ergatives, unergatives, accusatives, causatives, pseudo-passives and objectfronting – have been examined. Modifications have been made for certain kinds of RVCs that are usually misclassified. The analysis has been done at both the lexical and syntactic levels. A...
متن کاملResultatives: a Joint Operation of Semantic and Syntactic Structures
One of the most challenging aspects of the analysis of resultative constructions in English is the appearance in some cases of what we might call a \nonthematic object," an object that is not a semantic argument of the verb of the clause. This aspect challenges the claim that the grammatical functions of a clause are determined by the lexical properties of the verb of the clause. We need to aba...
متن کاملOptimality-Theoretic Lexical Mapping Theory: A Case Study of Locative Inversion
Locative inversion verbs seem to share the same argument structure and grammatical function assignment (i.e., ) cross-linguistically. This article discusses the nature of argument-function linking in LFG and demonstrates how the Lexical Mapping Theory (LMT) rendered in Optimality-Theoretic (OT) terms, where argument-function linking is governed by universal violable constraints...
متن کاملWord Order in Resultatives
This paper advances a general account of word order in resultatives. My conclusions derive from consideration of several languages, both VO and OV. Featured from the first group are English, Igbo, Edo, Ambae, Paamese, Mandarin, Shanghainese, Thai, and Vietnamese; included in the second are German, Ijọ, Japanese, Malayalam, Kannada, Mizo, and Yi. Resultatives are single clause constructions comp...
